The San Antonio Mastersingers and the Little Flower Basilica will again collaborate in presenting the 11th Annual Musical Shower of Roses Concert on Palm Sunday, March 16, 2008. Proceeds benefit the Little Flower Restoration Fund. The program each year is presented to sold-out audiences and features music that is particularly suited to the Basilica’s exceptional acoustics.
This year’s program, conducted by Mastersingers Director John Silantien, features two major choral works with orchestra: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Solemn Vespers and Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem. The presentation of Mozart’s Vespers will be a sneak preview of the Mastersingers’ upcoming Carnegie Hall performance of that work at the end of May—their third trip to that historic hall. The group has been invited to perform as a solo chorus on a program during the Memorial Day weekend in New York City ’s premier concert venue. The Little Flower concert will climax the twenty-fifth anniversary of Silantien’s tenure as Director of the San Antonio Symphony Mastersingers. Singers who have sung in the Mastersingers during the past twenty-five years will be reuniting with the group for the performance of Fauré’s Requiem. That work was the piece the choir performed at their Carnegie Hall debut in 1990 with the American Symphony Orchestra. Joining the Mastersingers for the Requiem will be the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio , who will also be celebrating their twenty-fifth anniversary season. Founded by Director Marguerite McCormick in 1983, the CCSA has enjoyed frequent collaborations with the San Antonio Symphony Mastersingers over the years. The Musical Shower of Roses Concert will be a fitting celebration of their twenty-five-year musical relationship.
